What Are The Risks of Extended Computer Viewing and How To Prevent It

Post by CharleX on Thu Dec 10, 2009 9:07 pm

Eyesight is a growing concern amongst people. Many studies have shown that extended computer viewing for multiple hours a day can cause loads of damage over time. Multiple hours? Many of us users spend 3+ hours a day... lets look at what we can do.
What risks are there?

  • An increased chance of developing Glaucoma in old age... especially if it runs in the family
  • Shortsightedness... especially if it runs in the family
  • Eye discomfort, headaches
  • Blearing, tired eyes, inflammation

Tips for avoiding eye stress:

  • Position the screen at roughly an arm's length away
  • Avoid squinting
  • Blink often to prevent dryness
  • Lower brightness and contrast (but not to an uncomfortable level)
  • Angle your monitor to avoid reflections
  • Use desk lights... there are models developed specifically to reduce eye stress
  • Look away from the monitor at distant objects when you have the chance such as when you're downloading/loading something, die while playing a game, when your internet disconnects for a while, etc.
  • Keep a clean monitor
  • Take frequent, quick breaks. Exercise in your backyard for a while or something. It's not that hard.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience any problems
Hope these helped!
